Sometimes

SOMETIMES
(Siedah Garrett, Brand New Heavies)

These songs were written trans-atlantically. I was hired in 1996 to co-write an equal number of songs with each member of The Brand New Heavies. The boys would send me tracks and I would conjure up a lyric and melody. Often I went back to London to demo each song with each member of the band on an individual basis. The song “Sometimes”; was the very first collaboration with The Heavies Jan Kincaid and the first tune to be recorded for the “Shelter” CD.
This was the first song I wrote with any of The Heavies. Jan Kincaid sent me the track from England, I created the lyric and melody, and flew to London to demo the song with Jan. It was our first attempt at writing, he was the first one of the three Brand New Heavies that I met, and it went on to become the first single from the only album we will be making together as a band, entitled “Shelter.” It started out, not with the line: “sometimes ya gotta do right, to be happy,” but with this one instead: “some folks would rather be right, than happy.” Aren’t you glad I didn’t go there!

TALKIN’ ‘BOUT A REVOLUTION, MAYBE JUST A CHANGE OF MIND
WORKIN’ ON MY CONSTITUTION, I BEGAN TO REALIZE
I’VE BEEN DOIN’ WRONG FOREVER, TROUBLE IS MY FAVORITE GAME
BREAKIN’ HEARTS I THOUGHT WAS SO CLEVER
BUT, I’M THE ONE WHO GOT HURT PLAYIN’
I NEVER COULD SEE IT COMIN’, NO
NEVER COULD FEEL IT ‘TIL IT’S COME AND GONE
BUT, ALL OF THAT DON’T MEAN NOTHIN’, NO
WHEN YOU’RE ALL ALONE

SOMETIMES YOU GOTTA DO RIGHT TO BE HAPPY
ONE TIME YOU GOTTA BELIEVE IN WHAT YOU FEEL INSIDE
SOMETIMES YOU GOTTA DO RIGHT TO FIND HAPPINESS
SOMETIMES, SOMETIMES

YOU’RE LOOKIN’ AT A TRANSFORMATION
THAT’S BROUGHT ABOUT A CHANGE IN ME
LOVE’S A BRAND NEW SITUATION, NEVER HAVE I FELT SO FREE

CAUSE I CAN SEE IT COMIN’ – YEAH
AND I CAN FEEL IT CALLIN’ LOUDER, NOW
LOVIN’ IS SO REWARDING – YEAH
WHEN YOU LET IT OUT

*Repeat CHORUS, twice
(Gotta do right, cha gotta do right, ahh sometimes, sometimes) x3
